01 / THE IDEA

Our efforts to improve
can enrich the lives we live.

Douglas describes mental maps as the patterns that guide us in everything we do. As we use them, they become familiar. Mind Over Time is his master mental map for improving those patterns—and, through them, the quality of our performance.

For Douglas, improvement reaches beyond the task at hand. He connects it with happiness and with five hopes he sees in all of us: being respected, joyful, loved, wise, and free. His invitation is to understand this connection and put it to work in our lives.

01Light tracing the curves of a sandstone canyon

The joy of improvement.

Douglas asks us to find satisfaction in improving something, even when our circumstances are difficult.

02Sunlight rising through tall forest trunks

Freedom of choice.

He gives individual choice and commitment a central place in turning our best thinking into action.

03Snow-covered mountains reflected in still water

Hopes we share.

Being respected, joyful, loved, wise, and free: these five hopes give his work its human purpose.

These are summaries of themes in Mind Over Time. Passages in quotation marks reproduce Douglas’s words; the surrounding introductions are written by the family project.

“improvement becomes a pleasure to be sought rather than a burden to be carried.”

02 / THE AUTHOR

A life devoted
to the possibilities
of improvement.

In his autobiographical introduction, Douglas describes a path from Air Force service during the Korean War, through political work, into nearly forty years of quality consulting.

In his account, improving the quality of people’s work became a way to do good in the world. Mind Over Time grew from that experience and his desire to help people understand how improvement could enrich their lives.

When Douglas asked young people what they hoped to do with their lives, he heard a desire to help others. That spirit of service runs through his work. Our family is preserving it so that others can read, consider, and learn from his ideas.

Biographical summary drawn from “Author by Author” in the original manuscript.

“I believe it will make you feel, as I do, that at the root of our humanity each of us has a need to serve, lighten loads, and enrich lives.”

04 / RECORDINGS

Ideas shared through teaching and music.

Alongside the written work, the archive holds training recordings, music associated with Winds of Freedom, a Kiwanis talk, and testimonial videos. Together, they trace how ideas moved from the page into teaching, conversation, and creative work.

We are reviewing the recordings to identify their voices, establish their context, and prepare suitable material for listening.

The person behind the work

Autobiographical writing, a partial memoir, photographs, and historical website records are helping the family document Douglas’s life. The archive is being assembled with attention to his voice and the context of his work.

A fuller biography and selected archival material are planned as the sources are compared.
